Commercial Poultry Shelters
If you’ve ever considered starting up a commercial free-range poultry operation you should take a look at the range of shelters from Outpost Buildings. They have a range of high quality kitset buildings that are innovative & well designed.
Anyone with a wee bit of back yard can successfully keep chickens. They will thrive as long as they have a dry, draft free place to live with fresh clean water and suitable food.
Outpost Poultry Shelters are easy to keep clean, just tow them away from the mess to fresh ground & replace nest box hay regularly. Your hens will appreciate the fresh ground. Hens also enjoy having a dust bath which naturally helps prevent parasites.
Pictured here is a 12 bay shelter currently in use in Geraldine. This model houses up to 100 hens without the need for a permit from the council. It has removable wooden perches, 4 chicken doors for free ranging, rubber draft stoppers around the bottom edges and is skid mounted so it can be towed around your block with ease!
“The ‘girls’ are here now, really quiet and many of them laying flat out already, even though they are only 18 weeks old. Great chooks, and real characters. Anyone who has come and looked at the house are really impressed with it and we are too.” Gail Graham, owner of the pictured shelter.
Poultry Housing information
The size of your hen house should allow approx 5 birds per square metre.
Hens have a natural tendancy to perch. Providing a perch in your hen house is important, it creates space and will make your hens more content.
Nests need to be kept clean, comfortable and fairly dark to encourage the hens to lay eggs. Generally you should allow 1 nest box (35cm2 approx) per 5 birds.
