Several Kiwi eventers have sent a strong signal to selectors ahead of the London Olympic team announcement with top placings at the Bramham International Horse Trials over the weekend. The ever consistent Andrew Nicholson finished second on Olympic hope Nereo and Caroline Powell was fourth with her lovely grey campaigner Lenamore.
A double clear by Nicholson and Nereo in the showjumping phase of the CIC3* wasn’t quite enough to take victory. The combination finished on their dressage score of 42 and in second place, just 3.3 penalty points behind William Fox-Pitt on Neuf des Coeurs. Powell and Lenamore finished on their dressage score for fourth place, with Nicholson just .8 of a penalty behind on Avebury in fifth.
Meanwhile, the Olympic selection deadline is looming as the countdown to London is down to under 50 days. The eventing team will be named on the July 3, with potential combinations looking to impress the selectors in their final run at Barbury Castle at the end of this month.
Dressage rider Vanessa Way and her mount KH Arvan have one further international competition in which the combination can achieve the Olympic standard for Dressage set by ESNZ and the NZOC – at the Hartpury International Dressage Festival (CDI3*) in the UK on July 6-8. Until then the combination will compete at national level shows in the UK. If successful, Way and Arvan will be the second New Zealand combination nominated for selection to the Olympics, after Louisa Hill and Bates Antonello. New Zealand will have a maximum of two dressage combinations at London and ESNZ has now confirmed that New Zealand will not field a dressage team at this year’s Olympics.
