In equestrian news, the New Zealand Young Rider show jumping team suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of the Queenslanders, who had the home advantage for the trans-Tasman test in Toowoomba, earlier this month. Both teams were tied on eight faults after round one, but team captain Matthew Dickey said the Aussies were the better team on the day. Most of the Kiwi team hadn't competed since the Horse of the Year Show back in March and a lack of recent time in the ring showed.
There has been more success for the offshore Kiwi eventers, particularly the evergreen Andrew Nicholson, who seems to be on a roll. Nicholson took out the CIC*** at Hartpury aboard Mr Cruise Control at the weekend. Fellow New Zealander Caroline Powell was ninth in the same class on Boston Two Tips.
Nicholson also bagged the top two spots in the open championship at the Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe with Nereo and Avebury recently. Nicholson last won the class back in 2002 with Mallards Treat. It was a Kiwi whitewash on the leader board as Jonathan Paget on Clifton Lush were third and Mark Todd aboard Major Milestone took out fourth place. To cap off a successful weekend Nicholson also won both advanced sections with Calico Joe and Quimbo.
The next big event for the Kiwi eventers is the prestigious Burghley Horse Trials, which starts on September 1.
