Winter is on its way!

Well the winter chill has arrived and it's time to make sure the horses have their winter rugs on and to make sure we avoid the horrible winter issues like mud fever which is a plague to a lot of us!

A few quick tips to help avoid mud fever:

Hose off your horses legs every day. Even if they go straight back out in the mud, this is a really great way to clean the bacteria off the legs AND to have a good look over the legs to see if any mud fever is forming. The sooner you catch it the easier it is to treat!

Stable stable stable. Obviously most of us don't have access to stables but if you do stabling reduces mud fever considerably as they are out of the mud for at least half of the time each day.

Pick your horses feet out daily. Again running your hand down a horses leg and picking the feet out allows you to have a good look at the leg and foot. And it also helps keep the likes of thrush and other bacteria out of the foot by giving it time to air out.
